Normally something is given in exchange for free a persons email. Commonly know as a lead magnet. A Lead magnet can be an eBook, list, video, training or anything of value just to get the email address of the target market.
This can be done for free or paid ads. You can use Google, Facebook, Youtube, Instragam etc or use SEO. Once you send the people they will either optin or not. This is how your list gets built.
So once people get on your list ensure you as a marketer remember that the each email address is an actual person.
